Canning Turkey and Pandemic Preparedness Classes for Both Now!

Welcome to our Guest Blogger

Abigail Haddock aka The Frugal Fräulein

(Emergency Preparedness Consultant and Trainer)

Hello and Happy Thanksgiving!  Since the holiday is almost upon us, I wanted to let you know about two newly scheduled classes and some turkey news.  Being the Frugal Fräulein, you should all know turkey is at an all time low in price.  At the same time we are on the brink of a possible Avian Flu Pandemic.  Put the two together and it is time to have a Family Emergency Meeting over the holiday while eating succulent turkey, mashed potatoes and GAAARAAAAVEY (quoting Little Richard in a recent commercial).  To help you with this daunting task I have prepared two classes: Safe Pressure Canning, and Pandemic Preparedness.

Turkeys - Now's the time to buy

Turkey is on sale throughout the U.S. in anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday.  Go buy as many turkeys as your freezer can hold, cook them, then can them.  If the Avian Flu becomes a pandemic most all fowl will be eliminated.  Canned chicken and turkey will be premium. Locally (in Washington), turkey is $.27/lb with a $25 purchase in groceries, $.39/lb 10-15 lb or $.59/lb 17-22lb at Safeway.  Fred Meyer offers a free turkey with a $100 grocery purchase.  Mega Foods offers a turkey, ham, bag of potatoes, canned veggie, box of stuffing and can of cranberry sauce for $20.  It is suggested you stock up now while the price is right.

Safe Pressure Canning Class: Sunday November 18th from 10-3. We will can turkey, homemade broth and turkey soup, and learn the basics of pressure canning low acid food, meat, poultry, seafood and soups/stews. All materials provided. You'll even go home with a jar or two of turkey. The class is limited in size so register early!  The class will be held at the "little house" at The Ant School of Preparedness located at The Survival Center, 19223 Cook Rd., McKenna.  Cost is $50 paid in advance. $55 at the door. There will also be a sale price offered for the All American Pressure Canner for all who attend! Call now to reserve your seat. 1-360-458-6778

Pandemic Preparedness Class: Having been part of the state, county and local pandemic planning, I am aware of the plans being made to prepare for an Influenza Pandemic, probably the Avian Flu strain. The contingency planning is based not on if something will happen but when something will happen. My 2 ½ hour seminar includes:

  1. What is a pandemic?

  2. History of pandemics

  3..Epidemiology of a virus

  4. Avian Flu

  5. Government and local plans

  6. What is social distancing and what effect will it have?

7.What can you do to prepare for a pandemic?

    a) Make a plan

    b) Make a flu kit

    c) Learn basic home healthcare

    d) Store food, water and supplies for an 18 month time span

Next class: Monday November 19th 6:30 pm

Where: The Ant School of Preparedness located at The Survival Center, 19233 Cook Rd, McKenna.  Paid pre-registration is $25. $30 at the door.  Call 360-458-6778 ext 2 to register with credit card or register in person at The Survival Center Store. PLEASE call to let us know you're planning to attend so we can set up the appropriate size space.
