WHILE TESTING YOUR VOCABULARY, YOU ARE HELPING WORLD HUNGER. A BRILLIANT CONCEPT THAT APPEALS TO YOUNG AND OLD.
With all the rice shortage stories flying through email in-boxes and appearing in newspapers these past few days, people's fears have escalated. We must remember to hold our focus and not get swept up in this wave which only contributes to the fear.
The website of FreeRice.com came across my desk today and the timing couldn't be more perfect. Started in October of 2007 by a private individual John Breen, FreeRice.com has two goals:
1) Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2) Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
The online game is addicting knowing you're not only challenging yourself, you're making a difference in the world. For each word you get right, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Food Program. Since its inception in October of 2007, 28,961,618,550 grains of rice have been donated. Just on April 23rd of this year 243,886,100 grains were donated. That is stunning!
Go to the website www.FreeRice.com and find out for yourself. You can choose different levels of vocabulary and different options for playing. Pass this on to your friends. Enjoy.
The power lies within us to stay focused and to make a difference.
