Lofty Thought of the Day

A huegel is German for a mound of earth and a Huegelbed is a water management tool, a water reservoir, a compost pile, a wind break and a garden bed. Huegelbeds are also at the heart of the Sepp Holzer vision of gardening and one of the main subjects of this first two day Sepp Holzer Permaculture workshop in Yelm.
Class started at the Deschutes Grange and over 50 people were on hand. 10 of them are on the Holzer staff. Holzer, his son Joseph Andreas and 8 apprentices were on hand to help impart the knowledge of rebel farming. That knowledge does not limit itself to the garden by any stretch.
The idea of the huegelbed is so foreign to traditional gardening that I literally had to see one to understand it. You can judge the size of it in this photo of Joseph Andreas and I will tell you more about it in my next post because today we build our first Heugelbed on day two of the first Yelm Workshop....STAY TUNED FOR MORE.......
